The term "hexane-free" refers to oils that have been extracted without using hexane as a solvent. Hexane is a chemical commonly used to draw out the oil from plant material. However, some people are concerned that traces of hexane could remain in the final product, which might not be good for your health. When an essential oil is labeled as "hexane-free," it means the oil has been obtained through methods like cold pressing or steam distillation, which do not use hexane or any other harsh chemicals.
This makes the oil purer and possibly safer for use. Knowing that an oil is hexane-free can give you peace of mind, especially if you plan to use it for therapeutic purposes or even ingest it. Therefore, if you are looking for essential oils that are as natural as possible, opting for hexane-free versions is generally a wise choice.
A carrier oil is a type of oil used to dilute essential oils before they are applied to the skin or used in various therapies. These oils are derived from the fatty parts of plants like seeds, nuts, or kernels. Unlike essential oils, carrier oils are not volatile, meaning they don't evaporate or have a strong aroma. They serve as a base to "carry" essential oils, which are often too concentrated and potent to use directly on the skin.
Popular carrier oils include coconut oil, olive oil, castor oil, and jojoba oil. Each carrier oil offers its own unique blend of properties like moisturizing, antioxidants, and vitamins that can benefit the skin. Choosing the right carrier oil depends on your specific needs and the therapeutic benefits you're seeking. Always mix your essential oils with a carrier oil to ensure safe and effective use.
Cold-pressed is a method of oil extraction from plants. This extraction process involves mechanical pressure and does not use heat, which helps in preserving the aromatic and therapeutic properties of the essential oil. The mechanical process is less complex and yields a very pure form of essential oil.
Cold pressing technique is most used for citrus fruits like oranges, lemons, and limes, although it can be used for other types of plant materials as well.

Apply shampoo directly to the oiled area before using water, as water can spread the oil. Massage the shampoo on your hair/scalp while it's still dry and let it sit for a few minutes to break down the oil. Then add water and lather. Rinse thoroughly, repeating the process if necessary.
General
Using essential oils on pets requires serious caution. Essential oils are highly concentrated plant extracts and can be toxic to animals, especially cats and small dogs. What is safe for you might pose a risk for your pet, who could unintentionally inhale, lick, or swallow these essential oils.
Pets have a more sensitive sense of smell and different metabolic pathways, making them susceptible to essential oil toxicity. Before using any essential oils on your pet, consult a veterinarian experienced in essential oil use for animals.

The FDA has not given its approval for the internal use of any essential oils. Essential oils are highly concentrated and can be as potent as certain chemicals. For that reason, we strongly advise against taking essential oils internally.
Oils last longer when they're kept cool and away from light. To keep essential oils working well and safe for the family, especially if you have young kids, it's important to store them the right way. Put the oils in a cool, dark spot like a high shelf or a locked box where kids can't reach them. Make sure the bottles are closed tight to keep air and moisture out. Don't keep them near anything hot. If you put them in the fridge, let them warm up a bit before you use them.
We advise to avoid using essential oils if pregnant or nursing. Do not use on babies or small children. Consult a healthcare provider before using essential oils during pregnancy and while breastfeeding. Consulting a qualified medical professional and an experienced prenatal aromatherapist is crucial for safety.
Some oils like lavender are usually safe in later trimesters, while others like cinnamon, clove, camphor, wintergreen, and rosemary, can cause contractions and should be avoided. Essential oils are potent and can affect your unborn child. Always dilute them with a carrier oil and test on a small skin area first. For safest use, opt for inhalation methods over topical applications and never ingest oils while pregnant.
